Since we just had our first little one a few months ago, I thought I would share with you 10 of our absolute favorite baby things. Many of these were things we registered for or people told us to try. Some are things we just stumbled upon. All of them are wonderful in our new parent opinions! So, without further ado here are my July Favorites – Newborn Essentials!
We did not use a paci right away, but when Logan was a few weeks old we found that it helped him return to sleep at night. We tried these pacifiers and never looked back. They are the only ones he likes. We put him down without one when we can, but they work wonders when he is fussy or when he wakes up in the middle of the night.
A friend told us about these, and boy oh boy do they work! They smell fresh and clean even when what is inside stinks! We use them at home for the really icky diapers and always have them with us when we go out for on the go diaper changes.
#3) Eddie Bauer Diaper Backpack
My husband chose this backpack, but we both love it. It’s neutral so he feels much better carrying it, and the pockets are so smart. We love the easy access wipes container and insulated pouch.
#4) Eddie Bauer TrailGuide Jogger Travel System
We love our carseat and jogging stroller! They were simple to put together and install and have held up well so far. They had good ratings and weren’t outrageously priced (we had a pretty strict budget!). I love being able to fold up the stroller and store it in our vehicle, and it is so nice to be able to jog with Logan.
#5) Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is the only thing that cleared up Logan’s baby acne and kept it at bay. I also used it on his cradle cap. I didn’t have to worry if he got it in his mouth, and it made his skin super soft. Bonus: all those kisses on his little head kept my lips hydrated too!
#6) Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash
We tried both the Johnson’s baby wash that was sent home from the hospital and the Burt’s Bees wash, but both aggravated Logan’s baby acne and made his scalp peel even worse. The Aveeno Cream Wash has been gentle and was the only thing that helped clear up his scalp.
#7) Renew Lotion
Both my husband and I love this lotion that we order from the company Melaleuca. It is the only thing that clears up my husband’s seasonal excema and the only lotion that keeps my skin hydrated. After a couple failed attempts with other lotion, we started using Renew on Logan’s skin as well. It completely cleared up what was left of his peely scalp, helps with any baby acne breakouts, and has made his skin super soft! When we notice that he is getting what looks like the beginning of an excema breakout, we put renew on and it is cleared up in a matter of hours. I wish I could by it by the crate! (Note: We did not use any lotion until sometime during Logan’s 2nd month. We only used cococut oil before that.)
#8) Little Remedies Gas Relief Drops
This is something I stumbled upon in my pre-baby research and made sure I had on hand when we brought Logan home from the hospital. I purchased the Gripe Water as well, but it never seemed to do anything. Poor little man gets some pretty painful gas, and the gas relief drops really seem to help. He also seems to like the taste, so it distracts him long enough to help him calm down.
#9) Vinyl Changing Table Cover
This thing is amazing. Instead of having to wash the cover each time it gets dirty, I can just wipe it off – with a wipe and then later with gentle disenfectant. It is also machine washable, so if anything gets on the super soft sides, I can just toss it in. The only downside with this is that when I don’t cover him up fast enough and he pees everywhere, it pools in the center – usually getting his clothes more wet. I’ve been able to move him quickly or lay a wipe or burp cloth down quickly usually, but I would say that’s the only downside. To me, it’s still easier than washing the cover every day (especially since we live in an apartment and pay for laundry).
Logan is exclusively breastfed, but I decided to pump so that my husband could feed him as well. It also gives us a bit more freedom when we go out or need someone to watch him. I also can’t always nurse him at work, so the bottle is necessary. My husband actually researched and chose these bottles, and we love them! Logan seems to like them and as long as we are consistent with using them, he drinks well from them. The venting system works really well, and Logan is rarely gassy after having a bottle (which I was concerned about since he was already pretty gassy!). Overall, we would definitely reccomend them!
