Today marks the day when we all have the opportunity to exercise our very important right to vote. As a woman, I can’t help but think how not very long ago I would not have been allowed to cast my vote. My voice would not have mattered. But today, my voice was heard. And yours was, too. Our voices and worldviews and beliefs may be different, but they still both matter.
I may not agree with your political stance, but I do believe in the freedom we have to disagree. The fact that we have the right to think and vote the way we feel convicted to is a privilege I don’t take lightly.
If we were sitting down for coffee together, I’d want to know your story. There are issues that make my blood boil, things that I feel very strongly about – and I’m guessing it’s the same for you. I know there’s got to be a deep reason behind why you feel differently than I do, and I promise to listen to what you have to say. I believe it’s possible to hold unapologetic convictions AND offer unconditional love.
I pray we can both choose kindness and conversation over harsh clap backs on social media. I pray we can both consider the other’s point of view without judgement. I pray we both remember that God is greater than any political party.
And I pray we focus on the fact that no matter who leads in the white house, you and I lead in our houses. WE determine the future – through our relationships and our attitudes, through the kindness we show those who differ from us, through the character we instill in our children. WE determine the future in the way we respond to each other when we disagree.
Though I may not agree with your political views, I do agree with God that you are His beloved child, just as I am. And that unites us. Let’s find some common ground and change the world together in the way we lead our people well.
