My Dad always said Valentine’s Day was a made up holiday and that we should be loving our people well all year long. I tend to agree with him, but I still think it’s fun to be a little extra intentional this time of year! Besides, what else are we Midwesterners to do in the dead of winter?? All that pink and red brightens up the grey! Here’s a few ideas to share the love as a family this Valentine’s Day (or any day!).
Make Cards
This is a classic one with the kiddos. Fold paper, cut out hearts, decorate with stickers and markers. Repeat. Give. Smile.
Take a Themed Family Photo
Dress up in your fanciest clothes, Make a giant heart with your kids’ arms and legs, Get creative and take some fun photos for the memory books.
Send Valentine’s Cards
Didn’t get to the Christmas card this year? No problem. Let your people know they are loved with a Valentine’s Day Card instead! Bonus points for having your kids put heart stickers on the envelope or heart confetti inside.
Make Heart Cookies
Again, this is fun and classic plus kiddos love being in the kitchen! If you’re not a baker, grab a roll of dough at the store. The point is to be together and have fun! Eat some and give the rest away!
Send a Surprise “You are Loved” Box
Grab a few fun treats (i.e. heart cookies!), some coloring pages, and fun activities (Target Dollar Spot!) and toss them in a box with some heart confetti! Send them to a few families to make them feel loved!
Leave a Valentine on Your Neighbor’s Doorstep
Make a few extra Valentines or heart cards and spread some love in your neighborhood. You never know what people are going through. That little act could change their entire life, and it helps kids focus outside of themselves.
Perform Random Acts of Kindness
Make a list of sneakily kind (doable) things and put them in a jar (check Pinterest for inspiration!). One family member a day gets to draw and lead the act of kindness!
Make Your Kid’s Valentines instead of Buying Them
It doesn’t have to be complicated! Obviously, this is easier the fewer kids you have but there are tons of free printables on Pinterest, etc. Pick a date (not the night before!) and have fun with your kiddos!
Mail a Simple, Heartfelt Treat
My grandmother used to mail me a handwritten card, malted milk balls and usually a mini teddy bear every Valentines day. It always made me feel so special. I love the idea of doing this for family that might not live locally!
